Quilt Fresco

HELPING HANDS QUILT PROJECT

While reading through a few Google Alerts this morning I came across Nellie's blog, (Teodo Linda of Appunti Patch had sent out an alert). With Nellie's permission I'm re-posting portions from her blog ........... a plea for 'fabric hands' .



I am giving a hand to the project described below from LaGatta blog. She says:

My goal is to get as many hands as possible to compose a big fresco for a friend. In order to get a beautiful fresco I need various fabrics and colors. And so there will be a sort of unit, power and sense of whole coming from this work. Somehow the only freedom is the choice of fabric and color. No matter the quality of the fabric, no matter whether it is new or used, what counts is to understand this project and to participate for the pleasure of doing it.


Instructions:

Take a piece of fabric, a material or a color that reminds of you.

On the back side of the fabric trace the contour of your hand (right or left like you prefer).Then cut leaving from 5 to 8 cm (tad over 3 inches) for the arm.

Do not embroider, do not embellish , do not collect anything. Do not try to distinguish with your name, adding pearls or anything else. I really insist about this !!!!!

There is no need to line it either, it is really necessary that the hand is in accordance with the others.

Put your hand in an envelope and send it to me, writing separately on a piece of sheet your name or your nickname.

There is no need of inscriptions nor confirmations, and to gain more time I leave my address:

Especially do not lose time writing me by e-mail to tell that you want to participate, or to explain that you could. That you have not been able to. It would be only lost time .... The time, that we need so much! I won't send e-mail to confirm that I've received your hand but everyday in a corner of my blog I'll update the list of the received hands. And above all, please do it as soon as possible. Those who want to show their hands on their blogs, explainingfor example their choice of materials and colors, and perhaps this will allow other quilters to add their hands to ours.

Come on then, help me to demonstrate that the virtuality of our relations is based on the reality of our friends. And if you have any questions ask here on the comments of this post I'll reply so that everyone can take advantage from them.I'll count on you and your friendship. A big thanks in advance!

Now I wasn't quite sure what a FRESCO was so I looked it up. Fresco (plural either frescos or frescoes) is any of several related painting types, done on plaster on walls or ceilings. So to me this sort of means a wall quilt ...... guess this is my quilting license. LOL

I'd like to suggest that you draw your hand on freezer paper (found in the grocery near wax paper and etc) ...... gives more control. Also allows you to place your hand in the perfect spot on your quilt fabric. As you can see at the beginning my quilt fabric was quite busy but I wanted to highlight the family, beach and ocean ... all my LOVES.

My hand placed exactly on the fabric so that it says who I am.

2008 Ripley Quilt Show

Saturday a quilter friend (Bonnie) and I took in a small quilt show. This group, Jackson County Creative Quilters Guild, has a show every year.

Yes, I took photos of all the quilts. This guild has a host of hand quilters. In fact, of all the quilts in the Show only a few were machine quilted. Fabulous work.

This quilt won 1st Place in the Machine Quilting Category.

This quilt took 1st Place in the Hand Quilting Category.

AND this one took Viewer's Choice ....... it was fabulous. She told me it took her several years to complete. Each embroidery stitch was perfect and the hand quilting was unbelievable. It is a treasure for sure. I'm sorry the photo doesn't show the embroidery thread colors ... they were very vivid.

Quilting Friends

I haven't written for a week. It's been a sad week and a long week.

Jan Jackson, an internet quilting friend, from Quilting Passions forum passed away on March 31. She was diagnosed on March 27 with advanced liver cancer and it had metastasized in her heart. She will be missed. Jan was a great support of Q.P.'s charity work.




Those from Q.P. wish to honor Jan's memory so we have a quilt project in progress for the next 6 months. We'll make quilts for Project Linus and donate them in Jan's memory. The following two (2) quilts I'm donating in Jan's memory.


I'm calling this one "Girl Talk"

And this fleece quilt will be name "Little Fishy's"

Then my dear quilter friend Irene from Canada has been living at the hospital for over a week. Leo, Irene's DH, has been very ill. On 3/26 Leo was rushed to the hospital. Test showed a cyst on his pancreas that is restricting blood flow to the spleen. On Sunday 3/30 he started bleeding internally and vital signs started crashing so they rushed him into surgery. The cyst on the pancreas had ruptured into the spleen, so they removed the cyst and the spleen and they think they have stopped all the bleeding. My dear friend Irene is hanging on. We continue to pray for Leo and a complete recovery.

Thank You Everyone

Wednesday Quilt Group

Today was my Wednesday Quilt Group. So I hope you jump over to the Wednesday quilt group Blog and read about our fun day.

I really enjoy this group .... no rules ... no dues .... just friends quilting, knitting, sewing, embroidering and more. Today we chatted about all kinds of things from fish to funerals (funny ones).

String Quilt, my first

I admire the String Quilts ...... I've made one of my own at last. I see lots of String Quilts at Mary's blog. LOL

The blocks are pink and white, 12 inch finished size (48x60). It's hard to see but the aqua center strips are suppose to made a heart shape. I've decided to not put borders on, just quilt and bind. I probably should have used darker fabric. It's not quilted yet but soon I'll load it on Prince Charming. I plan to donate it ... not sure where yet.

I have tons of scraps so I see many string quilts in my future .........

Happy Easter Everyone

The Easter bunny stopped at our house, leaving 3 neat Easter baskets for our 3 GC.




GD#1 received a sweet basket. The bunny left here gold post earrings, movie pass, gourmet jelly beans, eggs with money and candy. Plus a special treat of dill pickles and Mountain Dew.















GS who is all boy. That Easter bunny certainly knows his stuff. He brought Bee Game for the Wii, special sports car, mini M&M, dinosaur eggs with candy. Plus more eggs with money, movie pass and the special Sunkist soda.










GD#2 will be so surprised. Easter bunny brought her a fancy alarm clock, movie pass, eggs with candy and money, sugarless gum. She also got a special cell phone charm, all sparkle and pink. Not to mention Diet Coke, too.









Now next year I'm going to plan (in advance) and make this adorable Carrot Table Runner string quilt. I've already started to collect oranges, yellow and all in between. It's quilted ... you know quilt as you go method.









Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter and didn't eat too much.

Quilt Studio Mess

Well I'm just sick ... we ran out to WalMart Wednesday evening to help the Easter Bunny with his shopping for the GC. When we got home our back yard and side yard was flooded. AND so is half of my quilting studio wet. No real depth of water but the commercial carpet is soaked about 14 ft into the room. What a mess, my poor quilt studio. None of my machines nor Prince Charming were harmed.



I had a pedicure scheduled this morning (Thursday) ... was going to cancel but figured I might as well cheer myself up. Then had my hair cut. DH came home at lunchtime to continuing sucking and place more fans. Not too much of my stuff got too wet. If I had been putting my goodies away when purchased I wouldn't be in this big mess. All my machines are ok .. just got the bottoms of their feet cleaned. LOL



Going to relax .......

The Quilted Work (a new quilt/long arm shop)

I am sooooooooo excited. My friend, Marla Work, had her Grand Opening this past weekend, on National Quilt Weekend. (Marla (middle)).

THE QUILTED WORK

You're in for a real treat when you visit Marla's quilt shop and retreat center (yes retreat center), 1600 square feet. Marla also is a long arm quilter (Gammill with Statler Stitcher). She has the accucut system (over 100 templates), wide backs, fat quarters, fabrics and classes.

Oh see those little flags ....... those are Daylilies .... her DH's passion.

National Quilt Day Sat. 3/15

I went to a little quilt show (42 quilts) on Saturday. I took a few photos and you can see them HERE The photos are somewhat on the dark side as it was dark inside the museum.

Our favorite was "Wales and Sails" by J.Bertozzi .... all machine. It was perfectly pieced, fabric colors so pleasing to the eye and beautifully quilted (machine). Just our opinion.


































This quilt, Eureka, won Best of Show - Machine by C.Edmonds.


This quilt, Hands All Around, won Best of Show - Hand by N.Ott.

Forgot to mention ...... the local TV station was there filming their 4 second clip. We were so surprised to see ourselves on the 11PM news. LOL

I plan to return to the Show on Sat. 3/22 for the demos, lectures and more.
