Seaport Harbor Quilt (HST)

I've entered The Quilting Gallery's triangle quilt contest. Yep you got it ... I'd love for you to vote for ME. Go HERE to vote.

I made the full size quilt (90x90) for our DD#2 and new SIL for their guest room. SIL, Greg, is a collector of lighthouses. I quilted in sea shells and water for motion.

Backing

Instead of making shams I made 2 sets of pillowcases which are reversible. The three (3) below plus a set which match the backing.

To complete the look I made a valance from the backing fabric to finish the room.

Several weeks ago I posted about Quilters Newsletter collecting Quilts for Japan. I had several kiddie quilts made up for emergency. I selected 7 quilts and sent them off.

Quilts have started to arrive by the boxes and boxes. I hope that my small contribution made it to Quilters Newsletter offices in Colorado.

Quilters Newsletter and Quilts for Japan

Way way back in the mid 1960’s I lived in Japan. In fact, I graduated from Nile C. Kinnick High School along with 42 other military brats. And long before the 1960’s I lived in Hawaii several times. Gosh both living experiences were miles apart. So … if you can the Japanese people need our help.

Quilters Newsletter has long enjoyed a friendship with Patchwork Tsushin, a leading Japanese quilt magazine. So when Editor in Chief Naomi Ichikawa emailed to say her magazine is collecting comfort quilts for those impacted by the recent earthquake in Japan, we wanted to join the effort. QN will gather quilts from U.S. quiltmakers then forward them to Naomi and her staff, who will deliver them to those in need. (If you live outside the United States, email me as indicated below, and I will provide information on how you can send quilts directly to Naomi.)

Here’s how you can be part of this important worldwide response:

GS had a redo on his bedroom. Started out with hunting theme, then had fishing/bear theme. Now 2011 he has a WVU room, sporting yellow walls with blue accents. I had some yellow sweatshirt fabric so made him a really super soft pillowcase with navy blue cotton cuff. Oh and I had to drive myself crazy doing french seams

A perfect day for a sweet baby's baptism ....... she was truly beautiful.

Her dress was made 18 years ago when her first cousin was born and baptised. I made the dress from several patterns, did the smocking with beading, ordered the laces. ribbons and fabric from Texas. And made the hat from scratch and did the cross-stitch too.

My entry for the Amy's Blogger Quilt Festival.

I made this quilt to celebrate GD#3 arrival. She is a miracle baby for DD#2 and SIL.

The quilt is based loosely on the Yellow Brick Road pattern. I say loosely because I found YBR difficult so I sort of did my own thing .... I think it turned out great.

DD#2 is a not a quilter or sewist but she definitely has the color/pattern eye. So off we went to 4 quilt shops in her area and Joann's too. She wanted lots of pattern with a touch of black and hot pink. Oh we found so many wonderful fabrics.

I used chenille from Joann's .... oh my gosh that stuff is so soft and cuddly ... it was perfect.

As you can see I used a heart, teacup and teapot theme for the quilting. That was DD#2 theme for her baby shower and the room is decorated with touches of teacups and teapots.

New Family Member

Say hello to our next 'probable' family member.

She showed up one day this summer all skin and bone. Yes we started to feed her, posted notices, called the Humane Society .... but no one came forward. She's a tiny thing and we figured maybe 6-9 months old. We thought she was black but nope she's a dark sable with little hints of white tips plus a tiny white spot on her belly.

Now I didn't want another cat, no matter how cute. My GC adopted her but hey she has to stay at my house as they have fishies, dogs and guinea pigs (yes all plural). Of course, the discussion of a name ... oh we had all kinds of ideas like pumpkin, blackie, sam, spookie, boo boo, Miss Kitty .. the list went on and on forever.

I dug through fabrics and found this fleece scrap, threw it into a box lid. I know I'm terrible but remember I didn't want another cat ... we have one already.

The granddogs, Tippy and Oreo, find her interesting and they're all about the same size. We do have to hide the cat food ... they eat it.

Tippy and Oreo said if you're going to stay we'll share one of beds with you. Yep I guess Boo-Boo Kitty is permanent and next month will get the snip snip done.

By the way, the Vet says she's about 2yrs old, weighs a big 7lb now and apparently most of her teeth in the front rotted away ... oh man that makes me sad. So sends some kisses and hugs to Boo-Boo Kitty and her new home.

This block was made to honor Walter Matuza, Jr, New York resident. He was the father of 3 boys, killed in the Trade Center. Each section represents Walter's life: he served in the armed forces; family fishing trips, loved playing with his 3 boys and cherished his wife dearly.

Our own City lost Mary Lou Hague. A financial analyst for Keefe, Bruyette & Woods Inc., 89th flr of WTC, Tower 2.

Please remember all who lost their lives and those left behind.

Christmas Tree Skirt

I've been working for a week or so on a Christmas Tree Skirt for DD#2 and family.

It's 60" wide, I used felt from Joann's, some wool, some flannel and other goodies. Only the snow is stitched by machine ... all other pieces I hand stitched. Snowpeople are made of batting. A very long time ago I remember seeing the snowpeople in a book but all the other pieces are my own. It's true I'm no artist.

As I said I hand stitched all the pieces ... I was inspired by this BLOG, of course, she uses the real thing instead of felt. I do love her work.

Receiving Blanket Tutorial

I never imagined I'd make receiving blankets but GD#3 likes her blankets big. She's not a fan of the snugglers but loves her big girl receiving blankets.

I'm sure everyone knows how to make them but here's a little, quick tutorial my way.

I buy 1.25yds of flannel. Wash and dry to shrink the fabric.

Even up the edges and trim off the selvages.

I round my corners so find a circle that works for you, mark with pencil and cut off with rotary cutter or good scissors.

I use my very old serger to finish all around. You can thread the tails back through or I use Fray Check.

This is GROSS ... don't look if you have a weak tummy.

For the last 3 days we have been overrun with flies .... I've never seen so many. I kill 1 and 3 more appear. One thing is certain if there was an award for the Greatest Fly Killer I'd win hands down or maybe that's hands swinging. This is just a few that I killed in an hour. We can't figure out how they're getting in.

After almost 2 days I sent DH out to get some fly paper. Ugh that stuff is just nasty but it is helping.

I just about wore out our ancient fly swatter ... you can hardly find this jewel in the stores nowdays.

It's time to change the nasty fly paper ..... yahoooo DH I have a job for you.

There were so many I really liked but these 2 captured my heart.

This one is all about marbles, yes marbles. I can remember playing marbles as a child ... do kids still play with marbles?

This one is a Christmas dream. Can you find something for every letter of the alphabet?

GD#2 is a dancer, a beautiful dancer. (sorry the photo is blurred) Last night was the Company's 44th Performance.

This short 5min video was an audition CD which won GD#2 a coveted spot at the Cincinnati Ballet summer intensive 3 wk program.

Baby Diaper Cake Tutorial

First let me say that my DH made the diaper cake (with my supervison of course). LOL

There are many diaper cake tutorials available and even more photos of diaper cakes. We did use a tutorial but also added our own twist. A google search will show you many versions.

OK so let's get started:

1. You'll need some regular size and large size rubber bands.

2. Diapers, I used size 1-2, up to 15lbs. How many you use will depend on how big you make your cake. Some use 2 sizes of diapers, I just used the one size.

3. Start rolling from the top, keeping it tight and even.

4. See how tight it is. Place a regular size rubber band around it.

5. This is our bottom layer. DH used this can to hold the hole in place. Place a large rubber band around the whole section.

6. DH used a old pool floatie to place in the middle of the cake. This holds all the layers together and gives it stability.

7. I wanted to use silk leaves but could not find them locally. He went out in the yard and picked a number of leaves. I selected the one I like, he made a cardboard pattern.

8. Vellum scrap paper was used in the tutorial and after much searching I finally found green vellum. He drew and cut each leaf individually.

9. DH used posterboard to cut rounds which go between the layers. He cut out the center of the round so it slide over the orange pool floatie. I used a 16" dollie on the bottom and then 12" dollies for the other layers. Our rounds were cut so that the design on the dollie edges showed nicely.

10. Our diaper cake was 3 layers as seen here.

11. The leaves help to cover the colored diaper design that shows when you roll. Each leaf was placed and then tape was used to hold it in place. Glue does not work.

14. I bought a large plate and glass at Goodwill. The plate was dark brown so I painted it white (2 coats). I used E6000 glue to attach the glass to the plate, waiting 24hrs to dry.

15. We used 2 ribbons. The silver was 1.5" wide and black dot 1" wide. I measured around each section and used tape to hold the ribbon. You can see the tape in this photo.

16. The flowers were silk. The top ones are jammed into the pool floatie. The other flowers are just jammed between the layers.

17. DH did a terrific job. We loved the diaper cake. It looked so elegant.

PHS
Parkersburg High School was one of the very first high schools in the State. The school was founded in 1867. The current building housing PHS has a Tudor Style architecture with three stories. It was built in 1915, making it one of the oldest school buildings in State, still the largest high school campus in the State.

GD#1 Plans to attend Marshall College in the fall. I made her this double fleece quilt for her dorm room.

Say hello to Baby L due July 19.

DD#2 and I went on a shopping trip to 4 quilt shops to pick out the perfect fabrics for her little girl. I used almost all of the 26 pieces DD#2 selected.

This quilt is for DD#2 and SIL's miracle baby ..... joy and happiness abound. Every stitch quilted with love, prayer and welcome.

The High School looks so pretty at dusk.

GD#1 looks so beautiful ... she ordered her dress off eBay from Hong Kong. She saw the dress here in town at $450 .... Hong Kong cost $80.00 which included shipping. It was perfect and purple her favorite color.

Friends who came over for dinner. Mom and Dad cooked up a wonderful meal and yummy dessert.

Graduation is next, May 29.

She's all grown up ... where did the time go ....

Bear Cub Scout

GS is a Bear Cub Scout. The first requirement for a Bear is to earn his Bobcat badge (learn the Boy Scout pledge, Law of the Pack, learn about WEBELOS, Scout Handshake and the Cub Scout Motto). After earning the Bobcat badge, scouts begin working on their Bear badge. The Scout must complete 12 achievements (out of 24) to earn the Bear badge.

He did a variety of things from learning about cooking, different sports, how to spend money wisely, whittling (a personal favorite) and bike safety. He was the first one in his group to earn the Bear badge.

He really enjoys Scouts and next week they are visiting the news paper office to see how the papers are printed and the following week he will be learning about knife safety and earning his knife safety card so he will be able to take his knife to camp.

"Strippers" Quilt Retreat

Last Tuesday my friend Nancy planned to deliver some finished quilts out at North Bend State Park. They were having one of their three annual quilt retreats at the Lodge. So I went along. The 46 quilters were so friendly and welcoming that I decided to join them. So .....

I took off on Wednesday last week for the quilt retreat at North Bend State Park, joining 46 quilters from Ohio, WestVirginia, Tenn. It's out in the woods and a little rustic.

OK I'm joking that's not the Lodge. You can blame my DH ... he thought it would be funny.

This is the "real" lodge. I forgot to take a photo so this is one from their website during summer.

DH came to pick me up Friday morning ..... oh dear the roads

We made it down the mountain side into the closest town, Harrisville, about 8 miles from North Bend State Park.

Now we're on the 4 lane but only 1 lane was cleared

Oh dear I do hope the tractor trailer driver is ok

The closer we get to our city the road is better

And there she is ... our little brick house ... about 32 miles from North Bend

Well I'm all signed up for the full week in February 2011 .... rooming with my friend Becky ... I can't wait.

Last month GD#2 announced she wanted to dance this summer at the Cincinnati Ballet. In the summer they have 2 dance sessions but you must audition and be accepted. Competition is fierce with auditions conducted in PA, IL, KY and OH plus video. So we went to the Schrader Youth Ballet studio to video tape her .... 2hours of practice, music selection and taping .... this netted us 6 minutes of audition video. Off it went into the mail.

In the mail Tuesday a thin envelope arrived addressed to "Miss xxxxxx" ..... oh my oh my crying burst onto the scene ....... she was ACCEPTED for the summer session. How exciting for a 12year old ..... she'll be dancing 3 weeks in the summer program.

I've never seen a chocolate fish. GS is crazy for fish and plans to be a professional fisherman someday.

My 1st cousin is going to be a Grandmother very soon way out in Kansas.

I made a double fleece and baby burpies. Her DD is decorating the nursery in a ZOO theme ... so cute.

I used the Sprung pantograph by Jodi Bemish from Willow Leaf. I love this pantograph ... it looks good on lots of quilts especially baby ones. Quilted on my Prince Charming (Nolting 24" PRO) with SoFine (top) and BottomLine (bobbin) threads by Superior Threads.

and, of course, baby burpies

3 layers of well washed/dried flannel. I used the FREE pattern from this website Search on the words baby burpies. Oh you will need to register in order to download the PDF file. It's a simple dog bone style pattern.

Let me tell you a little story about "love at first sight".

A young woman "M" from Ohio goes to visit a college friend who lives in the northeast. While relaxing one day the friend says "hey let's go to Boston and see the sites". So off they go, check into a hotel and hit the streets to see the sites. Now on the spur of the moment a young man "G" had to go to Boston for his job from Pennsylvania. He, too, checks into a hotel but across the street from where the college friends are staying. "G" passes "M" on the street, their eyes meet and his heart goes ba-boom. Later that evening he decides to go to the City Bar and who does he see but "M" also in the Bar. He waits a bit, gets up his nerve and goes over to their table. And as the saying goes ..... love at first sight burst and their fate was sealed.

A Night Out

The Stitchers Group had an evening of good food, interesting quilts and a GREAT Play.

Dinner was at di Vinci in Williamstown, WV. Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio is celebrating their 175th anniversary with many activities.

The Play, "QUILTERS", is an musical that journeys through the trials and celebrations of pioneer women and the hardships faced while heading West. The main character, Sarah, plus 9 women who played her daughters sang, danced and told the stories of their lives. The musical has been nominated for five Tony Awards, ranging from Best Musical to Best Original Score. It's lively with lots of music, scenes of raw emotions and toe stop dancing. I really enjoyed the 2 1/2 hour production.

In conjunction with the Play is a small art exhibition "Women in Fiber: from Craft to Art". The fiber pieces are mostly in the artie line and only about 4 or 5 quilter's works are displayed. There are many many quilters in the area so that part was quite disappointing.

If you're in the area the Play, "QUILTERS", is a "not to be missed" event. I'd even go see it a second time.
